I like this because it's true, and beautiful. But right now I like it because I've been spending a lot of time thinking/writing about its opposite, how human beings can unmake the selves/worlds of other human beings by refusing the humanity of others. The indifference of nature is something else entirely.

ah, well, thanks for posting this, and giving me a peek into a life that once intersected mine.

this just shows that whatever you do when you don't know what to do is fine. in fact, that's about it.

love you, halliday.

"Cartesianism takes thought outside of immanence, but not by referring itself to the idea of being.... Descartes shatters immanence thanks to the idea of the infinite. This idea is inadequate par excellence, for it consists in some way of thinking more than it can think. Must we not consequently think that the comprehension of being is not the most intimate work of thought and does not lead us toward the ultimate secret of subjectivity? In agreement with Plato and Plotinus, who dared pose, against all good sense, something beyond being, is not the idea of being younger than the idea of the infinite?" --Emmanuel Levinas, Transcendence and Height

hmmm...oddly enough, the domination thing has never occurred to me, tho i can see why it would.

being a symbol of the crucifixion, that certainly suggests domination, and the simple practicality of hoisting a nailed body up high where all could see and be afraid. using guenon's definition, too, if the horizontal is time and the vertical is eternity, then in the xtian cross eternity trumps time. which sorta explains why life then becomes just some slog to get thru on the way to heaven, instead of part and parcel of what eternity is.

stating the obvious, maybe. just never thought about it in that light, so thanks.

well, i don't know. maybe i'm flickering, or maybe the world is, or maybe consciousness itself is. who am i to say?

breathing in/out, sleeping/waking, day/night - nothing appears continuous. i hear that consciousness is continuous, but i don't experience it that way. except in moments when i do....

then we get into meta-this, and awareness of awareness of awareness....until i fall asleep again. my brain gets tired. i love sleep. i love that i *have to* sleep.

(the heart loves what it can't know. nice.)

yeah, i dunno. what my heart knows is its own secret, and it leaks out sometimes.

Yes, it is like that, in a way. It flickers. Not one, not two. Not one, not two.
Sometimes I also experience it as a kind of simultaneity. Like two parallel processes going on continuously. Or rather, the shimmering mystery is continuous. The separate I who experiences everything in relation to himself is what is flickering, on and off, on and off, dying and being reborn every moment -- seeming to disappear and then slipping in the backdoor again. But his death and rebirth show actually has no impact at all on the endless formless surging that is consciousness.
I say a kind of simultaneity because my mind cannot think simultaneity -- I "know" it in my "heart." Though of course those are only metaphors; it is not known by anyone; it is not localized anywhere.
Yet somehow it seems to me
That I "know" it in my "heart."

thanks for that.

i say, yes, yes it will. because grass is not only a shivering mystery, it's also a walking surface, and therein, i say, lies the continual surprise of it. binary world, blinking off and on, in us, out there, because that's what it is.
